BMW GS, a myth on two wheels to discover Puglia

Birth of a street phenomenon: BMW R 80 G/S, the first in a long series of Gelande Strasse

The first appearance of a BMW GS dates back to September 1980, at the Cologne Motor Show: for the first time the Bavarian car manufacturer presents the R 80 G/S (Gelande/Strasse or to be clear, Country/Road), la unique on/off road motorcycle.

Out of the blue a Enduro BMW was presented after being developed in total silence.

Before the creation of the Gelande Strasse, off-road motorcycles were not at all suitable for long journeys, until Lazlo Peres (BMW engineer) tried his hand at designing the R 80 G/S. At the Cologne Motor Show everyone was excited about the new born at BMW house, so much so that in 1981 were sold around 6630 items: a new segment opened up before the eyes of enthusiasts, a travel enduro able to handle any type of route with ease, also thanks to the twin-cylinder boxer engine, as powerful as an off-road vehicle, as manoeuvrable and dynamic as an off-road one.

The fame of the R 80 G/S grows up to one of the most exciting outdoor motor and motorcycle races in the world: the Paris-Dakar. Despite the objective difficulties of a race like the Paris-Dakar, the BMW GS did not disappoint any of his fans, taking home two victories both in 1983 and 1984. The success was so great that the Bavarian carmaker decided to send a special edition of the first BMW GS to production: the R 80 G/S Paris-Dakar equipped with a 32-liter tank and Michelin-anchored tires. This version of the BMW GS was also a resounding success, so much so that around 3000 BMW customers preferred the edition in honor of the Paris-Dakar rather than the classic R 80 G/S.

1987 is the year of change: the R 80 G/S cchanges its name to R 80 GS and mounts on a 800 cc and 50 hp engine. The R 100 GS with a 980 cc and 60 HP engine is added to the firstborn. It is the true consecration of the myth, the R 80 GS and the R 100 GS will remain in production until 1996 and to them will be added the R 1100 GS in 1994, the R 1150 GS in 1999 , the R 1200 GS  in 2004 and R 1250 GS in  2018.
